Fashion Friday No. 59: Plaid and Stripes

I have a rule: I only do prep if it's going to look personalized. Cookie cutter style is definitely not for me, but since I do love the clean lines and classic charm of so many preppy pieces, it's hard to cast them out of my closet entirely. And anyway, who said that plaid and stripes clashed? Making sure that one color appears in each item - in this case, navy - ties the disparate pieces into a cohesive look that's equal parts preppy and fun!

While the 70's will always be my favorite fashion era, I can't neglect the fact that I was brought up in a decade infamous for major fashion don'ts: the 90's. Remembered for its affinity for bright lips, denim on top of more denim, and animal print galore, 90's inspiration is often done best in moderation. Though I don't know if one can really call them "moderate," these leopard print booties are one of my favorite things in my closet and I love the idea of pairing them with chic, casual basics like a denim shirt, black tights, and black bandage skirt for a modern look.

Happy New Year! As I set out to list my New Year's resolutions for 2012 in my journal yesterday evening, I remembered this wonderful DIY calendar journal project that I saw on Design*Sponge last year, created by Ashley of Ashley Ann Photography. The idea is to create a 365 card journal with one index card for every day of a year. Then, you write a short phrase that describes what you did on each day that year on its corresponding card. The result is a lovely history of the past year, filled with bits and memos of days you have long since lived past. Each card serves as an important reminder that everyday has a moment that makes an impact on your life, big or small.

I love this project because instead of starting out a year with a list of things to accomplish, the calendar becomes a catalog of all that you have accomplished and experienced every day. I find this simple format for journaling refreshing, non-threatening, and most of all, encouraging. On January 1st, it can be tempting to worry that if you don't change or achieve the five or ten things that you have resolved to in the New Year, then you won't have accomplished quite much at all. Year after year, the list on each card grows and houses more and more memories.

It serves as a simple reminder that every day, you make you, you. And P.S.: you're awesome.

I Heart Design Sponge At Home

When I got a Barnes & Noble gift card as a going away present from a former colleague, I knew instantly I'd be saving it to purchase Grace Bonney's home decor bible, Design Sponge at Home. As a longtime Design*Sponge reader and lover of all things DIY, I couldn't wait to flip through each and every glossy page.

Design Sponge at Home is four hundred pages of inspiring interiors, DIY tutorials, basic home design tips, and pure eye candy. Forgive me Grace, Martha, and fans as well, but with all of this goodness packed into one book, I can't help but feel like Design Sponge at Home is Martha's Good Things for my generation.

One section I know that I'll be referring back to regularly is the "DIY Basics" section. My mother is an expert sewer and crafter and though I like to think I can craft with the best of them, it remains true that threading a needle and re-covering a chair seat are still mysteries to me. Grace gives step-by-step instructions to some of the most common home DIY procedures, including sewing basics, staple-gun upholstery, and my personal favorite, how to paint furniture.

Since I am not a huge Christmas person, I have spent the past few holiday seasons looking for things to bake and DIY's to try to get me in the spirit. These Log Dome Display Jars (page 201) would make for darling snowglobes, don't you think?

One of my favorite apartments in the book is Rebecca Phillips' (photographer and yoga instructor) Brooklyn pad. Rebecca's space is full of pops of green (my favorite color!) and lots of great textural contrast. If you know me, you know that chevron dresser on the second page is calling my name!

Oh. Did I mention there is an entire series of DIY floral arrangements? That one's for you wedding crafters!

Homemade Halloween Treats

My lovely new co-worker, Sara, invited me over to her apartment last week to share some of her homemade Halloween treats and I just had to post the goods. There was candy corn, chocolate cupcakes, and best of all, mini cheesecakes! Sara was sweet enough to share the recipe for these autumn-inspired cakes below - enjoy!

Pumpkin Caramel Cheesecakes (makes 12)

Ingredients:

8 Oreos

1 1/2 Tbsp. Butter

8 oz. package of cream cheese

1/2 cup of pumpkin puree

1/2 cup of sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1 tub caramel dip

Cupcake papers

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grind Oreos in a food processor. Mix with melted butter. Press into bottoms of muffin papers and bake for ten minutes.

Blend cream cheese, sugar, pumpkin puree, egg, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spoon mixture on top of Oreo crust, 3/4 full.

Bake 25-28 minutes or until set. Top each with 1 tsp. caramel dip

Whether you're dressing up for Halloween or walking down the aisle, gothic bridal style never fails to make a statement. When I see a bride in heavy lace, black accents, and rich makeup and hair that pops, I think one word: "romance." If I was going to style a gothic bride, I'd surely steal some inspiration from these beautiful trends.

Since I feel lucky enough to live (literally) across the street from a Whole Foods, I try to pay forward my good karma by using reusable bags every time I shop. Now, if only it wasn't so easy to run out the door and leave them behind! That recurring bout of forgetfulness explains why I was so excited to order my very first batch of Baggu bags this evening. What makes Baggu so great? Aside from the plentiful selection of darling solids and patterns, each bag comes with a handy little carrying pouch that you can tuck your bag into for safe and compact keeping in any purse or tote. Everyday Calligraphy

It's been a month since I moved away from home - and away from some of my very best friends - so it should come as no surprise that I have cute greeting cards on the brain! I sent out a couple this week to a few of my (formerly) nearest and (still very) dearest and now I'm craving a couple new additions to my famed stationery stash. Fashion Friday No. 55: The Chiffon Blouse Experiment

Friends, this is the blog post equivalent of me crossing my fingers! The weather in Boston this week has almost been too chilly for an outfit such as this one, but I am wishing and hoping that my favorite time of year - "mini skirt + boot season" - is not overlooked by mother nature in 2011.

I had been dying for a chiffon blouse after seeing them all over the blogosphere and found mine at trend mecca, Forever 21, last month. Its a piece that blends so many of my favorite styles: tomboy chic, flowy bohemian, and work-to-play. I paired my oversized beige find with a black mini skirt, this necklace, and my favorite Payless booties. I also wore this blouse untucked with skinny jeans and black riding boots to dinner the other night, which I think gives me the authority to deem the chiffon blouse "very versatile"!

Boston Bedroom

I am all moved in to my new place in Boston and I am just in love with my cozy little bedroom! Through writing Paper Garland and reading super stylish blogs (like all of yours, of course!), I've really come into my own in terms of my personal interior style. I love white and geometric patterns, and mixing modern and vintage styles. I love collections of objects, lace, and corners that look neat and organized. My room is a great example of all of these loves combined and I think the end result is crisp and clean, while still feeling inviting.

Since my room is on the far end of my apartment, it faces an alleyway full of the backs of brownstone buildings, but because I adore exposed brick, I am kind of in love with my "view"! I love how the gritty brick contrasts with my lace curtains, don't you?

Though I really like how the styling turned out, I would love to put something on the wall above my bed. What would you put there? A garland? A print? Would you make a DIY headboard? Share your vision in the comments, if you please!

I was delighted when Paloma asked me to put together a fall look for Paper Garland as fall is my favorite season of the year...for more reasons than just NYFW! It's the season of blazers and riding boots, riding boots, jewel tones and pumpkin spice lattes... Cold enough for a scarf and blazer, but not the oversized down feather coats that add a solid 5 inches to your frame. Chilly-er temps allow for layering without feeling overheated! One color becoming increasingly popular on the runway is mustard yellow. While you won't find me wearing mustard yellow trousers (fearing I'd look like a ripe banana) I will be adding accents of the color to my looks. I've paired classic navy wool trousers with menswear inspired heels - adding in both the stacked heel & a touch of mustard yellow, and bringing it up with a skinny belt. I am a big fan of EmersonMade, and this tie-neck blouse looks like polka dots from afar, but they are really teeny little bees! A simply envelope clutch (a STEAL at only $38) and emerald colored cocktail ring by Kenneth Jay Lane tie the whole look together. If you're like me, and running around a city all day - pair these oxfords with the look for more comfort and equal style.

I recently added this hot pink 60s shift dress from Paprika to my ever-growing dress collection and I am so excited to finally own something in the hue of the season! I am pretty in love with the see-through chiffony sleeves, the ultra-short hem, the gathered neckline and the keyhole back. And for under $30, it was quite the deal as well! Swoon.

Not only do they remove excess oil from your skin without disturbing your makeup and keep pores clear throughout the day, but they smell good and are so easy to take with you on the go, too. I have tried a few different brands of blotting papers, and these are by far my favorite. Though I'm really not much of a music lover, I have no doubts about who my favorite band (of all-time) is: CAKE. The mariachi horns, John McCrea's cool voice over philosophical lyrics, the catchy melodies. It's pretty much love. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that the band members not only played an integral role in the binding and printing of their new book, Bound Away, they even carved the blocks used to stamp the title and created the paper for the book covers from recycled band t-shirts! How cool is that?

DIY: Sweater Guard

I'm back with another DIY project, my dears, and today's project really could not be easier! Let me preface this post by saying that I have never made jewelry by hand before or used a set of needle-nose pliers and this project still only took me about ten minutes to complete. Now that I've hopefully sparked a can-do attitude in you, let's get to the goods, shall we?

What you'll need
-A set of clip-on earrings
-Jewelry-making pliers/wire cutters (mine is a combination tool)
-Metal jump rings
-Length of metal chain

Step 1. Approximate the length of chain you'll need by deciding how far apart you'd like your cardigan to be open when you wear the piece. I chose to make my longest piece of chain about 5 inches long.

Step 2. Cut each piece of chain carefully using wire cutters. I cut four lengths of chain for my piece, but I think adding even more would look great, too! Hint: focusing on breaking one, single link apart is easiest.

Step 3. At first, I cut all of the lengths of chain to the same size, but soon realized that I was after the cascading effect you see in the final product. To achieve this, I simply cut a few more links off of 3 of the chains, then arranged them from shortest to longest before attaching them to my clips.

Step 4. Gently open the jump ring using the needle-nose pliers and slip on each chain (longest to shortest).

Step 5. Slip open side of jump ring through either a facet in your earring, or around the base of the clip, depending on which feels more secure. Gently close the jump ring using the pliers. Your piece is complete!

Step 6. Attach the clips to either side of your cardigan and walk out of the house - you're dressed!

Signet Ring Update

My obsession with signet rings (see: here and here) has only grown with time and now, I have one to call my very own! When I last left you, I had purchased a beautiful unengraved, vintage piece from an antique store in Vermont and was heading off to my local jewelers to get it looked at. I knew that I wanted it engraved, but I was thinking hard about whether my first initial or all three would look best.

The thing about signets is that they are one of those rare pieces of jewelry that you can wear forever, and it will always remain timeless and classic. I wanted to make sure that I was always just as smitten with it as I am today. So, after a little chat with my jeweler, we decided that based on the size of the ring and the fact that I want the piece to be a staple in my collection, that my first initial in an interlocking monogram script would be the best choice for me. And after seeing the finished result, I have to agree!

My ring post-engraving

I couldn't believe how shiny and new it looked when I picked it up! You can really see the cut-out details on the sides more now and the engraving is just so lovely and intricate.

At $78 for the original ring and $50 for jeweler services (which included a resizing, cleaning, and engraving), I am very happy with what a gorgeous piece I got for well under $150! It is the first piece of personalized jewelery I own and sometimes, a girl just has to buy herself a ring. Amiright, ladies?

Whoa. Let's play "never have I ever," shall we? I'll go first. Never have I ever seen a more beautiful "escort card" display. I love white text for weddings and on these old glass panes, it's both classic and vintage chic. And there is really so much more to love in this wedding (see baby's breath bridesmaid bouquets, the bride's statement necklaces, and the chandelier above the naked cake). Never have I ever swooned so much over one wedding post!

Pretty Craft Supplies

Crafting inspiration has been swirling around in my head like crazy these past few weeks. I've gotten to work on some gorgeous weddings with fantastic DIY projects this summer - like homemade "cork boards" for escort cards at a vineyard wedding and shabby chic seashell ornaments at each place setting for an ocean side fete - and I've been craving some new supplies to start some of my own crafty pursuits.

How gorgeous are these vintage Swarovski charms? I think they'd look great tied on a simple silk cord for an easy necklace or dangling from a lacy bouquet wrap.

This little spool of peach twine is just too cute to pass up. I love solid-colored twine - it's great for so many different things: tying up little packages of freshly baked desserts being just one of them!

And there's nothing quite like a fresh palette of white and green during the summer months, is there?

My beautiful girlfriends J and K hosted me at their Boston apartment last weekend and greeted me with this adorable welcome garland that I just had to share! It was made from a cute little kit from designer Lorena Siminovich that is available from Chronicle Books. The kit includes all of the letters you need to spell out multiple garlands, from "welcome," to "congrats" to "happy birthday!" Love it.

Sweater guards have been making quite the comeback since Glee character, Emma Pillsbury, started rocking them on top of gorgeous Kate Spade blouses and darling cardigans two seasons ago. I have a little DIY coming up for one next week, so I thought I'd share a little preview of my inspiration to whet your appetites.

I think a sweater guard would be such a fun addition to a typical business casual outfit - blouse, pencil skirt, cardigan - don't you?

Fashion Friday No. 50: Lena's Winning Look

Earlier this week, I gave you lovelies the challenge of styling an outfit around a particularly tricky fashion purchase I had made, and boy, did you deliver! I loved each and every one of your suggestions! So much so, that I now have enough ideas to wear this top weekly for the rest of the summer. In short, you ladies rock (but we already knew that didn't we?)

My dear friend Lena at la petite coquin is the winner of this challenge! She thought this top would look great with high-waisted denim and cognac accessories. Lena knows me well - I'm always game to add a little 70s flare - so I broke out my favorite wide leg Sevens, a mini vintage Coach messenger bag, and my new favorite BCBG wedges to complete this easy bohemian look.

What do you think? I think I'll be flipping through my closet for another underused item for you all to outfit-ize if you're up for it - this was too much fun!

I just received this vintage cropped swiss dot top in the mail from wonderful etsy seller, Rogue Retro - it was a steal at $6! I absolutely love it, but it's certainly one of those cases where I fell in love without really thinking it through. How does one style a see-through, cropped tank top anyway? I pass this puzzle onto you my friends!

How would you style it? With a high-waisted skirt? Over a longer tank? On top of nude negligee with patterned shorts?

Yes, just like that one! Well, I have become rather taken with the idea of swapping in my trusty Vera duffle for one of these vintage beauties for my next trip. I try to incorporate a little vintage flair into all of my outfits these days - whether it be by slipping on 60's cowboy boots instead of heels for a night out or swiping on red lipstick instead of my usual pink gloss - and I think one of these would be the perfect touch of retro for a travel ensemble.

Moody Monday No. 49: Seventies Bridal Style

My mom always told me growing up that I had a propensity toward seventies style, but I wasn't quite sure what that meant about me until I got a bit older. Now I know it means that I love bell sleeves, die for gold jewelry, charms, feathers, and halo headbands, and love lace. I covet deep v neck lines, clothes that need tying, chunky shoes, and worn leather. I just about jumped for joy when I found out bell bottoms, high-waisted pants, and flares were back in for 2011. The barely-there makeup look is something that I will learn to pull off or die trying to. High-heeled clogs are always at the top of my fall wish list.

And, seventies-inspired bridal style? I'll see you later. Someday, that is.
